problem
HP offers a diverse range of printer portfolios tailored for different target demographics and market. My team was tasked to envision future printers across various market segment and define the experience design. Research was planned across various segments of the portfolio. In parallel competitor analysis was done to understand how each printer segment faired across various geographies. After mapping the key issues identified during research and placement of scores on journey maps in context to competitors, the top three experiences were identified. There was a workshop arranged with cross-functional teams to brainstorm on possible solutions for these top experiences and use of technology Various inspiration from themostat to mobile interface were drawn to comeup with Modern UI Strategy. Not all solutions are perfect! Research showed that Dial UI though unique in application had poor user experience when applied to printer use case. So effort of one year by the team got scraped with this feedback. The team moved to bigger Control Panel UI to continue the Modern UI strategy. 10" to 2.7 inch designs were prototyped for testing and feedback.
solution
Customer is the king! Enterprise Customers gave feedback that the Modern UI for Large Format printers is revolutionary and there is lot of learning involved to adapt to this new design. So we had to design an inbetween from what they were used to and Modern UI solution. Slow Down to Speed Up! With Dial UI failure in testing and the Enterprise Customer's feedback on the Modern UI affected the enthusiasm of the UX team members. So we decided to take a break, do an outing and re-energize for the next phase of problem-solving. I reshared the North Star Vision for the Modern UI and where we want to be. New Energy brough in lots of ideas to solve the problem at hand. One team worked on the UI for the evolutionary UI which is an inbetween solution to Modern UI and older design. Another team tackled the Small Office Home Office(SOHO) Printer Portfolio which still needed a futuristic design. The SOHO Printer design (called Casual UI Design in house) proved to be revolutionary in this category and the physical ID design to UI design won allocades in the Design Community. The hardwork of 4 years came to this culmination for the team. It was so fulfilling with many patents filed and awards won!
